Chitral is situated on the Chitral River in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It serves as the capital of the Chitral District and was formerly the capital of the Chitral princely state until its incorporation into West Pakistan on 14 August 1947. Population: 49,780 (2017 census).
The Kho Chitralis came as part of the Indo-Aryan migration. The region shows Gandharan tomb culture influences, linking it to the Indus Valley Civilization and subsequent Persian Achaemenid rule. Vocabulary shows Avestan and Sanskrit mixtures.
Chitral was home to Iron Age Dardas tribes mentioned in the Mahabharata. Darada country extended from Chitral to Kashmir. Also identified as ancient Kamboja kingdom from Hindu epics.
In the 3rd century AD, Kanishka of the Kushan Empire captured Chitral. Many Buddhist stupas and monasteries were built, with fine Buddha images produced during Kushan patronage. Rock inscriptions at Brenas show Hindu kingdom connections.
